“Relic” in Community at Artcake

My painting Relic is on view in Community, a group exhibition presented by Yellow Chair Salon at Art Cake in Brooklyn. Open hours are Friday and Saturday, 1 to 6 PM.

The premise of the show is what drew me in. No jury, no application, and no curator picking winners. Any artist living or working in the New York area could show, on one condition: you deliver, hang, and remove your own work. It's closer to the Salon des Refusés than to a typical group show, and it treats the community itself as the curator.

Relic is part of Ground Work, my series of paintings made from secondhand clothing. I cut garments apart, sew the pieces into one surface, and stretch it. That's the finished work. No paint goes on afterward. Pockets, seams, and collars stay visible, so the painting keeps a record of the people who wore those clothes.

That makes Community a good fit. A show assembled by its participants, out of whatever each person brings, works the same way my paintings do: separate pieces, stitched together, keeping their seams.

The exhibition runs through Saturday, September 27.
