“Relic” at The New Humanity, Creative.NYC 2026
This month Relic-EB800 goes on view at the Creative.NYC Conference, "The New Humanity," at Calvary Baptist Church on West 57th Street.
Relic belongs to Ground Work, my series of paintings built from secondhand clothing. The garments come from thrift bins. I take them apart, sew them back together, and stretch them like canvas. Then I stop. Nothing is painted on top. The cutting, stitching, and stretching are the whole work, so the pockets, collars, seams, and wear stay visible. Each piece holds the traces of people I'll never meet: how a shirt was worn, where a hem gave out, what someone kept and what they threw away.
The work comes from one question: how do you put broken things back together? Discarded clothing is a good place to ask it. It is ordinary, personal, and already marked by use. Rebuilding it is a form of repair, and I'm less interested in the result looking new than in the history staying in plain sight.
